Pergamon – Best Historical Places to Visit in Turkey

Pergamon: King’s palaces located in Bergama district of Izmir. One of the places that everyone who is interested in history should see is the ancient city of Pergamon. It was founded on a hill in Bergama. There are libraries, theatres, palaces and temples in the ancient city. There are many places to see for the ancient city. It has three separate settlements. Its highest parts are for the king and his family.

The Historical City of Pergamon in Izmir Bergama

It was one of the few cities of Anatolia during the period when it was connected to Rome. The first excavations and researches about him started in 1878.

After regular excavations in Pergamon, a large part of the city was unearthed, and a significant part of the finds are exhibited in the Pergamon Museum established here. This museum is Turkey’s first archeology museum. The ancient city, which was included in the World Heritage Tentative List by UNESCO in 2011, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2014.

Pergamon was first mentioned in written documents at the beginning of the 4th century BC. The city later became the capital of the Pergamon Kingdom between 282 – 133 BC. During these 150 years, six kings ruled the country: Philyteros, Eumenes I, Attalos I, II. Eumenes, II. Attalos and III. Attalus The last king Attalos III donated his lands to the Roman Empire as he had no heirs.
