Telmessos has a well-protected harbor surrounded by islands compared to Fethiye Bay. The inscription reveals that Telmessos has been inhabited since its inception.
The ruins of Telmessos near Fethiye are some of the most impressive historic sites. Built in the early Roman period and restored in the 2nd century BC, it houses a cave tomb and a 6,000-seat theater. Apart from this, there is also a museum on site.
Lycian rock tombs is one of the symbols of the ancient city of Telmessos. The most beautiful and famous is the ancient one, built on two pillars belonging to King Amyntas (son of El Magios) dating back to the 4th century BC.
The left column is engraved with the name of King Amyntas in Lycian, and you can enjoy its magnificence as you approach. To reach the tomb, a ladder is climbing the mountain. There are many stairs, so you will be exhausted after climbing, but when you finally see it, Amyntas huge tomb is waiting for you, so it’s worth it. It is one of the most spectacular tombs in Turkey.
